Can this pet grooming salon earn enough to repay its opening cost?
Illustrative case · Dog-only fixed salon with three employed groomers, one employed bather and a paid owner-manager; no boarding, mobile services, retail, training, cat grooming or veterinary care · New York City, New York; illustrative 1000-sqft leased site, no address or site approval

The base case makes $342,249 in Year 1 net sales and −$49,807 in EBITDA after paid owner-manager work. Year 2 EBITDA improves to $29,989, but the base opening uses are not recovered within 60 months. The base reserve is short by $12,096. This is an illustrative ramp, not a measured salon margin.
Three appointment streams, one constrained roster
| Service | Completed mix | Net price | Groomer min | Helper min | Dryer min |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short-coat bath / brush | 25.0% | $65.00 | 35.0 | 15.0 | 20.0 |
| Small / medium full groom | 50.0% | $115.00 | 65.0 | 20.0 | 35.0 |
| Large / long or double-coat groom | 25.0% | $145.00 | 100.0 | 25.0 | 50.0 |
Net revenue equals completed appointments × the stated service mix × price. Booked capacity is first limited by people, baths, drying and holding; a residual 6.0% of booked appointments does not complete or pay. Cancelled slots that are refilled are outside this loss rate. No cancellation fees, deposits, tips, retail sales or boarding are added to repair the forecast.
A Brooklyn menu provides a useful price comparison: medium/large full groom $115.00, large $135.00, XL $150.00 and medium short-coat bath $63.00. That menu is explicitly an estimate subject to coat assessment; the case averages $110.00 net of sales tax. Demand and acceptance of annual price increases are unverified. First-party menu.
Most labor is committed before the bookings arrive
At Year 1 rates, gross owner pay is $4,000.00 a month; three groomers earn $25.00 per paid hour, and the bather earns $19.00. Employer taxes/insurance/benefits are a combined 18.0% assumption on all gross pay. Burdened monthly payroll is $23,946; fixed nonpayroll commitments are $6,013. Total fixed operating cost is $29,959. These employees remain paid during empty appointments.
The NYC 2026 minimum is $17.00 per hour. Our higher 2027 case rates are neither BLS skilled-groomer averages nor proof of future compliance. Rent, premiums and labor terms need owner confirmation. Observed wage floor.
Coat products, cleaning consumables, incremental utilities and in-person processing vary with completions. At the starting mix, contribution is $99.54 per dog before fixed payroll. Contribution is not employee gross margin: salary has not yet been deducted. The processor fee is based on tax-inclusive card receipts, with tips omitted. Processing rate.
A better average does not eliminate the downside
| Scenario | Year 1 net sales | Year 1 EBITDA | Lowest signed cash | Cash trough month | Extra funds needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base | $342,249 | −$49,807 | −$12,096 | 9 | $12,096 |
| Downside | $222,192 | −$160,721 | −$638,281 | 60 | $638,281 |
| Upside | $416,508 | $18,771 | $27,475 | 6 | $0 |
Base uses the stated ramp, service minutes and 6.0% residual lost-slot rate. Downside books at 0.8 times base, charges 1.0 times its price, takes 1.1 times the employee/resource time, loses 10.0% of bookings and raises supply use. Upside books at 1.1 times base, price is 1.0 times base, minutes are 1.0 times base and lost bookings are 4.0%. All scenarios retain paid staffing, owner work and initial funding.
The downside extra-funds figure is the cumulative modeled deficit; it is not a sensible recommendation to borrow that amount and continue unchanged. It signals that staffing, prices, lease or the format must change, or the salon must stop. The upside has no modeled cash gap but is still an unproved combination of demand and execution.

Cash, accounting profit and recovery answer different questions
Depreciation reduces accounting net income but does not consume cash in that month. Loan interest reduces both income and cash; principal reduces debt and cash, never EBITDA. Card clearing, consumable stocking, supplier credit and tax remittances create a separate working-capital bridge. Year 1 net income is −$69,625; the cash change after debt and CAPEX is −$69,409.
Project recovery requires cumulative cash after interest, principal, working-capital movements and replacement CAPEX to earn back all $174,854 of opening uses. Retained opening reserve does not count as earned recovery; no terminal asset sale or returned deposit is assumed. Base and downside do not recover in 60 months. Upside reaches the full basis in month 34 and the narrower nonreserve basis in month 26. These are separate definitions.
End-of-Year-5 base bank cash is $75,055, but cumulative cash earned after debt and replacement is only $10,055. The bank total contains the remaining initial reserve. Negative early balances also mean the later path is conditional on resolving the earlier funding gap; it is not evidence that the originally funded business could trade continuously.
Owner salary is paid work, not a free return
The managing owner receives $48,000 gross in the first model year, and that work is fully included in expenses. It covers administration, intake, client care and staff oversight; no extra groomer capacity is assigned to it. There are no modeled dividends or distributions. Personal tax, any legal-entity payroll treatment and debt-guarantee obligations remain outside this management model.
The model EBITDA/debt-service ratio is -3.14x in Year 1 and 1.89x in Year 2. This is a simple planning ratio, not a lender-specific coverage calculation or universal approval threshold. A lender would need an evidenced operating case and a way to survive the cash trough. SBA repayment context.
